Pittsboro
The once small and quaint town of Pittsboro (map),
with its downtown full of antique stores and restaurants, is
changing fast. The historic downtown will hopefully remain the
same, but the surrounding areas are experiencing explosive
growth. A new four-lane road has reduced the travel time from
Pittsboro to Chapel Hill to about 20 min. In addition to the
communities surrounding the town itself, there are other
excellent developments. The retirement community of Fearington
Village (map)
has the only four-star restaurant in the area, an excellent inn
and, of course, the signature herd of black-belted cows. Other
excellent communities in the area are Chatham Forest,
Potterstone Village and Chapel Ridge. East West Partners of
Chapel Hill is building Powell Place, a 148-acre project that
will include lots for about 1,000 homes, a hotel and a
commercial center at the corner of U.S. 64 Bypass and N.C.
15/501 about a mile north of Pittsboro. This is the
same group that produced Meadowmont in Chapel Hill however prices will be
a lot lower and the location is very convenient to both Chapel
Hill and Raleigh.
As land prices in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill continue to
rise, farm and forest land in Chatham County has become more
attractive to developers. This “underdeveloped jewel of the
Triangle” has recently hit a residential growth spurt as home
sales leapt from 425 in 2002 to 1,100 last year. The average
sale price for a home in the county in 2005 was $310,000, second
in the triangle only to Orange County and $75,000 more than the
average in Wake County. .
